Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin Spice, Pumpkin Patch...

What's in a quilt name?

Hi there! I'm back in my studio working on a UFO that has languished in The Bins for 17 years. This is another quilt from the book "Sweet Treats" by Sandy Bonsib, and the pattern is Pumpkin Pie. That’s the quilt on the table on the cover of the book.

This one has been roaming around in the back of my head for a long time, but it was farther along than I originally thought. I thought there was an adjustment that needed to be made due to a mis-sized block but I'm guessing I addressed that sometime in the past. I had fabric for a border but decided it didn't need it, and y'all know how much I love borderless quilts. Without the border the quilt is approximately 54" x 70", and I want to quilt this with an edge-to-edge on my Brother Luminaire. The bonus was that I had already picked out a backing fabric so the only decision that needed to be made was the quilting design.

Pay no attention to those wavy setting triangles...
Could I have digitized an edge-to-edge design? Yes, I could. But the way my brain works, I sometimes spend more time going down that rabbit hole when I could (and did) spend $5.40 for a design by Designs by Juju that fits the bill. It's another "I want this done" project:

I find myself wanting to stay on track with my quilting plan for 2026, and wrapping this one up helps me get there. I plan to display this in our foyer for at least part of autumn; it fits the wall perfectly.

Cindy recently purchased the Sweet Treats book and we are both talking about making the Chocolate Decadence quilt. I love dark, low-contrast quilts, and I adore dark browns mixed with deep reds. I'm fairly certain it won't happen this year, but it could be as soon as next year. I'm sure I have enough fabrics in my stash to make this one.

I love the red and black combination, too--please forgive the glare!
But back to the pumpkin quilt. When we still had the quilt shop, I thought this book would make a terrific club. The blocks for each quilt are simple and you can turn out any of the quilts pretty quickly. Obs, except for me. What I haven't mentioned is that I had a lot of help with this one--I enlisted the aid of several of my Girl Gang buddies who sewed this up for me one day at the shop. I was in the middle of working on two of the other quilts in the book to promote the club when we made the decision to close the shop, so none of the quilts were finished before we closed. You may remember that last year I made two baby quilts out of the blocks from the Lemon Chiffon Pie quilt from the book. I have the strips cut for the Key Lime Pie quilt.

As so often times it happens, I have been thinking about all the quilts I want to make and wondering if I’ll be able to get them all done. Some are specific quilt patterns that I have long admired, and others are for the people I love and do not know which of those will go to them, or if I'll come up with something else. Sometimes inspiration strikes when you least expect it (thank goodness) and you run with it. I feel lucky that that’s the thing that’s happening more frequently these days, and I’m grateful for it. But I’m also mindful of the many UFOs sitting in The Bins waiting for their chance to win the "free me from this Bin" lotto and be completed and ushered out into the wild (or onto our couch or wall), and that’s why you’re seeing more of let’s-get-this-finished from me. Yes, I’m desperate to start something new, but maybe I have finally reached that point in my life where I think I should finish some things first.

Thanks for going down the road with me. Stay tuned for the completion of this quilt (and the reveal of its name), and others. In the meantime, go make!
