Next Project Bin on deck - #21
This one may take awhile.
What’s in the bin?
Broken Crayons quilt — a flimsy |
International Mystery Tour Egyptian Pyramids quilt — all rows are pieced (I think) |
Rouenneries Baskets — a NESTY for a pattern I designed in Electric Quilt for French General’s first line of fabrics. |
|
Of these projects, the NESTY has gone back into the fabric stash. The rest will be completed this year. First up is the Stitch & B!tch Sampler.
In November 2016, Cindy, LeiLani and I went to the Houston quilt show. We started talking about doing a quilt along and I picked out the La Passacaglia quilt by Willene Hammerstein. Each of us bought the templates. No one enjoyed it. We then decided to do a block swap. Black and white with a pop of color and 10” for each of the blocks. We did this each month for a year and while I was late a lot of the time for each exchange, I still managed to get all the blocks completed by the end of 2017.
Cindy and LeiLani both finished their quilts long ago. I lost interest and put mine in a Bin. Last year I was going through my quilting books and came across a book by Ruth McDowell, “When Quilters Gather.” One particular pattern clicked on a light bulb and pushed me into thinking of layout possibilities. We will see how it goes. I’m experimenting with layouts in EQ and I’m really excited about it, but I need a design wall.
Broken Crayons is an adaptation of a pattern by the same name designed by Gerry Kimmel-Carr of Red Wagon Designs and is in her book “Quilts Talk”.
I have been a fan of her designs since I began quilting almost 30 years ago. I finished piecing it in 2016. A fast and easy quilt to piece, I got stumped on how to quilt it. My son says it’s screaming for hand quilting but I have no time for that—but maybe a hybrid of hand and machine quilting could happen. I want this to be a snuggly lap quilt; I have some dark brown flannel for the backing. While at the quilt show in Houston in 2016, I purchased some hand-dyed perle cotton that may work for some hand quilting on this one.
The IMT Egyptian Pyramids quilt is yet another leftover from the shop. I love all the colors and this is an example of me pushing myself into a brighter phase in my quilting. Again, put aside for reasons I can’t remember, but every once in a while I would bring it out and think of what I would do with it. It’s not large; I’m not sure it’s even lap sized, but it could make a nice wall hanging.
And the Rouenneries Baskets—I absolutely swooned over French General’s debut line for Moda Fabrics WAAAAY back in...2009? I envisioned a basket quilt for one of our guest rooms. After I designed the quilt in EQ, I moved on to something else and there it lies in The Bin. And now we have no guest rooms, but will in the future. I’m migrating these fabrics back to the stash.
The bin will keep me busy for awhile. But first, I need a design wall.
Project Bin 23 is also on my list this year and will be discussed in a future post. Project Bin 5 may also be on my radar for a special reason.
In other news, today is my birthday. I'm taking the day off to quilt! The flannel for the design wall arrives today (the Good Lord and UPS willing), and Hubs has graciously agreed to help me get the design wall installed. That's a great birthday present!
Have a fabulous weekend, and go make!
